FELA On Broadway Takes Home 3 Tony Awards!
Broadway’s hit musical FELA scored three Tony Awards at last night’s star-studded ceremony. The uplifting musical was based on the life of the late Nigerian Afro-beat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Presented at the 2010 Tony Awards (which were held at Radio City Music Hall) were FELA! executive producers Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce Knowles was there to support her husband’s accomplishments. Pregnant R&B singer Alicia Keys also snagged one as co-executive producer of the hit Broadway play. FELA was rewarded in the following Tony categories: Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design of a Musical. Not bad for FELA who scored 11 Tony nominations! (FELA is a must-see for the whole family! As reported on FG2BH, Nollywood actors Ramsey Noah and Uche Jombo were seen backstage at FELA on Broadway recently.)
The Carters and Smith are Hollywood’s top earning Black celebrity couples according to Forbes. Kudos to FELA for the Tony wins! TONY BUZZ: Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis and Oscar winner Denzel Washington (as did Scarlett Johansson and Catherine Zeta-Jones) walked away with a Tony as reported by ESSENCE. Viola and Denzel’s win made history because they became the first African-American performers to win a Tony for leading actor and leading actress in the same theatre season! (This win is also history for Denzel because it’s his first ever Tony! Congrats to the pair!)
