Congrats to Gugu Mbatha-Raw…

January 20, 2010

…for landing the plum role of Samantha Bloom opposite the upcoming Boris Kodjoe-starring NBC spy drama series, Undercovers. The show focus on a husband and wife-turned-an exciting CIA agent duo post retirement, which to some critics may appear to be Mr. & Mrs. Smith on a weekly basis. Considering that J.J. Abrams – the man behind Felicity, Alias, and Lost is producing this must-see show, that comparison will be far from the truth. (Please note the promo poster below as evidence.)

GuGu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe starring in Undercovers

The exciting news was first published on Twitter…and the Hollywood Reporter.

For those wondering who Gugu is, she’s a talented 26 year-old British actress born to a South African doctor and English nurse. Gugu, for the inquiring minds out in the blogosphere, is short for Gugulethu which means pride in Zulu. [Guardian]  Using the skills she mastered as a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Gugu appeared on the hit TV series in the UK called Doctor Who. -Nice!-

Kudos to NBC for casting not one but two African actors to headline a new series. I’m definitely looking forward to this show and the chemistry between Boris and Gugu.
