February 11, 2010

We are the World was recorded originally in 1985 and co-written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie with production by Quincy Jones. The 4x platinium song went on raise over $63 million for African humanitarian aid & charity. Fast forward to 2010…

Quincy and Lionel decided to have today’s biggest singers to record the song in light of the devastation caused by the earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12th. The Late King of Pop’s younger sister Janet Jackson reportedly recorded vocals for the track as well as Jackson’s children, Prince Michael, Paris, and Blanket. Lady Gaga and Jay-Z are also said to be on the charity single.

We Are The World 2010 featured artists and actors: Celine Dion, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Robin Thicke, Tyrese, Brandy, Keri Hilson, LL Cool J, Jamie Foxx, Pink, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Adam Levine, Drake, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, Bebe Winans, Barbra Streisand, Will.I.Am., Toni Braxton, Gladys Knight, Trey Songz, Natalie Cole, Justin Beiber, Wyclef Jean, Nicole Richie, Joel Madden, Benji Madden, Tony Bennett, Vince Vaughn, Sugarland, Rob Thomas, Jason Mraz, Katharine McPhee, 3T, Nicole Scherzinger, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Sean Garrett, Harry Connick Jr., Jordin Sparks, Lil’ Wayne, T-Pain, Melanie Fiona, Mary Mary, Swizz Beatz, India.Arie, Enrique Iglesias, Santana, Josh Groban,  Raphael Saadiq, Isaac Slade, Ethan Bortnick, Julianne Hough, Faith Evans, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Akon, Rashida Jones, Randy Jackson, and many more.

Proceeds from the song would impact various charities that would lend aid to survivors of the Haiti quake. Ironically the remake coincides with the 25th anniversary which was recorded at the same studio – Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood. Look out for the world premiere on February 12th – the same day as the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics!

We Are The World 2010 Behind The Scenes Featurette

We Are The World (Featuring Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, James Ingram, Billy Joel, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Dionne Warwick, Michael Jackson and more.)

Random thoughts: As much as I am thrilled that today’s artists got together to remake such a classic song for a good cause, I was hoping for something fresh and brand new. Maybe the producer and songwriter simply wanted pay tribute to MJ or maybe something new would have not gotten much press or spins on radio??? Also why was not one of the original performaners taking part in the remake? Nonetheless their effort and talent would go towards Haiti quake survivors…and that’s what counts!
