Vogue Italia Launches Vogue Black & Introduces Tolula Adeyemi As New Muse
In celebration of Vogue Italia’s historic launch of its Vogue Black online magazine, the fashion publication named Tolula Adeyemi their new muse. Tolula (Model by day/DJ by night) has quickly become one of the London’s most famous it girls.
Tolula discussed her idols, what she hates about herself, her favorite designers, sang acapella, and modeled a few Topshop-worthy pieces. Check out excerpt from the interview below..
“Marilyn Monroe for her complexity, intelligence, beauty. Josephine Baker for her talent and natural instinct. Cleopatra, one of the first representatives of girl power. Billie Holiday for her rock soul. Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick for their style.” But she is also crazy about Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, Blondie, Patti Smith, Sade, Kate Bush. And likes Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Kyle Minogue, Mary J. Blige and Katy Perry.
“I do like dresses and printed shirts, I could wear a new one every day for the rest of my life. They really suit my style, androgynous yet feminine.” (Dirrty glam)
“I have a British accent. It’s quite strong. Sometimes I feel like an alien who doesn’t belong anywhere.”
“My favourite designers are Alexander McQueen, Miu Miu, Prada and Vivienne Westwood. Vivienne is one of the most creative persons I know in the fashion circuit, she is so open.”
Tolula as you can see has a great eye for fashion and FG2BH loves the irresistable charm she brings to her fashion-forward outfits. (She really loves those Louis Vuitton heels, huh?)
When you first visit Vogue Black online you are hit with a glossy photos of three girls reminiscent of the golden glamorous Motown days when The Supremes ruled the music world. (Somewhere in the world Berry Gordy is smiling.) Attached to the photo is the title of “Natural Hair.”
With the strength of good and bad criticism Chris Rock’s Good Hair has received black fashion publication has been hook on all things natural. To keep up with that sentiment Vogue Italia Vogue Black featured naturally coif model/muse Tolula to push that image even further. Today we have acts like Laura Izibor and Nneka (both Nigerians) who are appreciative of this style. Their goal is clear as the Huffington Post best put it – Vogue Italia Launches Curvy, Black And Talents Sites. Simply put Vogue Italia has answer the call of a grossly not reported as much demographics. The real question now: Would they take the bait?
Here’s hoping that Vogue Italia would feature Africa’s beauty queens and Nollywood actresses in their upcoming online editions! (Who would have thought Vogue Italia would beat American Vogue to this epic release?? I do hope Vogue Italia would incorporate the timeless cool that Suede and Vibe Vixen had.)
In case you haven’t seen the Vogue Italia Black Issue and The Vogue Italia Black Barbie Issue visit here and here. Props to Nigerian-born/UK-based Tolula Adeyemi for being featured in Vogue Italia’s Vogue Black!
