Liya Kebede Channels her Inner B-Girl

March 3, 2010

Just like when female hip-hop pioneer group Salt-N-Pepa famously wore their much-copied asymmetrical haircut, that girl from the way vibe, oversize baseball/bomber jackets, and huge gold jewelry for their “Push It” music video, Liya Kebede (and model Lily Donaldson) paid tribute to that influential group’s  style via  a John Olins photo shoot that they did for V Magazine’s 64th Issue. (Props to HuffStyle & V Magazine!)

Supermodels Liya Kebede and Lily Donaldson turn up the volume in the next issue of V. This 10-page Josh Olins story finds them channeling hip hop goddesses of yore, namely ’90s chart-toppers like MC Lyte, Lil’ Kim, and the deliciously decked-out Salt-N-Pepa. [V MAGAZINE]

For some odd reason these photos took me back to the ’80s flashback scenes from the film, Brown Sugar. In honor of such, check out these ’80s influence music videos from Erykah Badu, M.I.A, Missy Elliott, and Salt-N-Pepa.
