Get To Know: Mataano

Somali identical twin sisters Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim of the hip fashion line, Mataano, were featured in the April 2010 issue of Essence magazine. Essence placed the girls for their  article titled Culture Club: Talented African designers bring influence from the Motherland to unique fashion and jewelry lines alongside Nigeria’s dress collection designer Lola Faturoti and Tanzanian’s jewelry designer Twiga Mbunda.


WHAT: Mataano (means “twin” in Somali) is the sisters’ young, sexy, affordable line, ranging from city-chic dresses to traditional caftans.
WHEN: The identical Somali twin, Ayaan and Idyl, moved to New York City straight from college at the University of Michigan and Boston University respectively. After a few fashion house internships,they debuted their own line in 2008.
WHERE: Sold at shops in Washington, D.C.(where they fled to escape civil unrest in Somalia) and New York City. Go to for stores.
