Speaking of South Africa…

1. Former South African President Nelson Mandela skipped out of this past Friday’s 2010 World Cup opening ceremony in his native homeland due to the sudden lost of his great-granddaughter Zenani Mandela, 13, who died in a brutal car crash. The young Mandela was on her way home from the World Cup music concert when the accident occurred. The Nelson Mandela Foundation release this official statement: “We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr. Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy. The family has asked for privacy as they mourn the tragedy.” According to various online reports, Zenani’s funeral will be held this Thursday. So sad…R.I.P!

2. Production on the Winnie Mandela biopic film starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard has kicked off in South Africa. Hudson, a Weight Watchers spokesmodel, lost some weight (she went from a dress 16 to a dress 6) post-baby for a role that has Oscar buzz. (Hudson would play Winnie when she was married to Nelson in the film shot on location in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Robben Island where Nelson was imprisoned for over 20 years.)  Howard on portraying a young Nelson Mandela: “Morgan (Freeman) did that part so well I also forgot that it was him in some parts of the film, but he also came with that stature of royalty. So I will do my best to pull it off. I know I can.”

3. African (re: Somalian-born/Canadian-based) hip-hop singer K’naan recorded a HOT song called “Wavin’ Flag” for the 2010 World Cup. Glad to see that FIFA picked a real African to record their anthem.

“I’m so proud of this version,” K’Naan tells Billboard.Biz. “We took something like 50 drums and did this crazy mix for it. It’s about the one time that we all get together and the world forgets its conflict and its problems and we focus on this unity and celebration. That moment is connected now to ‘Wavin’ Flag.'” BILLBOARD
