Chiwetel Ejiofor Scores Fela Biopic

July 14, 2010

British-bred Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor recently landed a breakthrough role as the King of Afrobeat Fela Kuti in the upcoming Steven McQueen-directed biopic, reports BV Movies. Just so you didn’t know, Fela has had a successful run on Broadway where the production recently collected three Tony Awards. Chiwetel as Fela is believably even though Chiwetel’s Igbo and Fela’s Yoruba. I’m also glad the director handpicked a Nigerian actor to portray such a prolific figure in music. To help prepare for the role, Chiwetel has learned how to play the piano and the saxophone.

The film, ‘Fela,’ will be directed by Steve McQueen, who received numerous accolades for his feature ‘Hunger.’ He will also write the script, which will be based on Michael Veal’s book ‘Fela: The Life and Times of an African Musical Icon.’ The film will not be based on the musical. Focus chief James Schamus stated: “The Broadway show is pure joy, but Steve and Biyi’s vision is very cinematic and distinctive. Fela was a revolutionary figure in world culture, and Steve is an artist who had a strong vision of politics and the world even before he made his first film. They are kindred spirits.” BV

A picture reveals a thousand words and questions as Chiwetel and his pretty date (???) proved when they attended the Chanel And Charles Finch Pre-Oscar Party at Madeo Restaurant this past March. Is she his date? Is she his movie co-star? Should we cross Chiwetel off our most Eligible Bachelor’s List since this might be his date???? So many questions, so little time to figure it out!

Moving right along….

Chiwetel can be seen up next co-starring with Angelina Jolie in this Summer’s thriller, Salt.
