President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama Host the 2011 State Dinner with China’s President Hu Jintao

January 20, 2011

Last night, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted their annual state dinner in honor of China’s President Hu Jintao. However what the First Lady wore has gotten the most media attention as usual. Mrs. Obama was seen in a custom off-the shoulder Alexander McQueen red and black silk organza gown that as you see from the photos got her husband’s approval.

Why red? Instyle has the scoop: red is the traditional color of good luck and happiness in China.

In 2010 Michelle wore a one-shoulder blue Peter Soronen gown and in 2009 she wore a sparkly beige Naeem Khan strapless number. One thing’s for sure Michelle is proud of flaunting her toned arms. Personally I think she looked beyond fab in 2009 but I love her hair style choice in 2010. Here’s a brief overview of Michelle’s previous state dinner look:

2009: Peter Soronen // 2010: Naeem Khan

In related news the First Couple are on the February 2011 cover of Ebony magazine as its “purpose” couple. As reported Ebony celebrated Hollywood’s black hottest couples in 2011 with Beyonce and Jay-Z and Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker.

UPDATE: Designer Oscar De La Renta has gone on record to discuss Michelle Obama’s choice of wearing a British designer look at the State Dinner. De La Renta felt that Michelle should have used this platform to give publicity to an American designer. And I quote,

““My understanding…is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?…I’m not talking about my clothes, my business. I’m old, and I don’t need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do.” WWD

Just maybe Michelle tried on looks from American designers and she didn’t feel confident or beautiful in them? It’s that the whole point? Rocking a outfit that make you feel glamorous??? He sounds a bit hurt that Michelle didn’t wear his designs as previous First Ladies Hilary Clinton and Laura Bush. Why is the focus not on what Barack wore and what Michelle wore??? Things that make me go hmmm….
