First Lady Michelle Obama’s Winning Grey Look + Oscar De La Renta’s Opinionated Statement on Michelle’s British Designer Dress Choice
First Lady Michelle Obama has been on a color style runt – grey. Grey has become her choice of color to rock at recent public appearances from the Jonathan Saunders shift dress to the Marc Jacobs fitted number. (Her last color obsession was PINK!) Which Grey Look did YOU prefer on Michelle Obama?

In related news, designer Oscar De La Renta has offered his opinon of First Lady’s British designer choice at the recent State Dinner. Michelle as reported earlier wore a red and black Alexander McQueen gown which looked just like this one from his Resort 2011 collection. Oscar argued that the platform Michelle had at the time could have given to an American designer…and not designs from a British fashion label.
And I quote his WWD interview,
“My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?”
De La Renta has since explained his initial opinion to WWD as
“This is an important issue. Some people did not get the point. It’s not [intended] to be negative. Do you think Kate Middleton is going to be married in Marc Jacobs? Or you’d see Carla Bruni dressing in American clothes? This is a big industry in this country. Mrs. Obama does look great. She should take that and do something. She could do a great good for our industry. We need to create jobs here, create jobs on Seventh Avenue, too.”
In light of his heavily publicized statement what do you think the First Lady would do – rock a design she feels comfortable and confident in or would she adhere to his message and wear an American design? Tonight is the State of the Union address so watch this space to see what the First Lady will wear!
UPDATE: Mrs. Obama wore a gray Rachel Roy sheath dress and her black and white ribbon was in honor of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. In the past Mrs. Obama has wore designs from Rachel Roy which you can see here.
