Michelle Obama In Moschino + Her Response to Her Alexander McQueen State Dinner gown

February 3, 2011

First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama attended the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. As always what Michelle wore gained the most media press. She wore a black and gray Moschino cap-sleeve jacket and dress. The President complimented his wife’s look.

Would you just look at the way Barack is looking at Michelle? I think it’s admirable! He’s so much in love with her. (Aww!) It’s no wonder Ebony named them their purpose couple. Michelle has since reacted to the critical reaction of her State Dinner gown by Alexander McQueen in a interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts. So, far Diane Von Furstenberg, Oscar De La Renta and Sally Singer have all been vocal about Michelle’s Alexander McQueen gown.

Sally Singer: T Magazine editor-in-chief Sally Singer appeared on Thursday’s “Morning Joe,” where she discussed the renewed interest in Michelle Obama’s style. Her main criticism of Michelle Obama’s most controversial dress to date, was “that it didn’t fit her well. It was then worn again by Mila Kunis and it should be worn by a diminutive younger woman.” She continued, “It was the wrong dress for her. She’s a beautiful woman and it didn’t flatter her.”

DVF: “CFDA believes in promoting American fashion. Our First Lady Michelle Obama has been wonderful at promoting our designers, so we were surprised and a little disappointed not to be represented for this major state dinner.”

Oscar De La Renta: “My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes? This is an important issue. Some people did not get the point. It’s not [intended] to be negative. Do you think Kate Middleton is going to be married in Marc Jacobs? Or you’d see Carla Bruni dressing in American clothes? This is a big industry in this country. Mrs. Obama does look great. She should take that and do something. She could do a great good for our industry. We need to create jobs here, create jobs on Seventh Avenue, too.”

Michelle to the criticism: “Look, women, wear what you love. That’s all I can say. That’s my motto. I wear what I like because…I gotta be in the dress, so…” (Huff Post: Michelle Obama Style)

Well said! I think the main problem is that she continues to embrace her true style and not play it safe. She could have but she didn’t. After all Michelle has gone on record to state that she finances her wardrobe with her salary. For the record Michelle has worn Alexander McQueen in the past. Besides why would one wear something just because it’s pleasing to others? Ultimately fashion is suppose to be about your style, isn’t it?
