Ajak Deng’s US Vogue March 2011 Feature – The Life Rhapsodic

February 24, 2011

Sudan-born, Australian-raised Ajak Deng has a noteworthy editorial appearance (The Life Rhapsodic) in the March 2011 edition of US Vogue alongside top black models Chanel ImanJourdan DunnArlenis SosaAnais Mali, and Joan Smalls. Also photographed with the models are famed tap dancer Savion GloverAnotonio Douhit, R&B singerJohn LegendColson Whitehead, and actor Anthony Mackie to tie in with the Norman Jean Roy-photographed concept – The Life Rhapsodic.

Ajak previously appeared in the buzzworthy editorials for Vogue Australia and Vogue Italia. Perhaps this is U.S Vogue’s response back to the All Black editorial Vogue Italia used??? Nonetheless I think it’s great that this fashion publication and many others are embracing models of different ethnic backgrounds to showcase Spring/Summer 2011’s latest style trends. New York Fashion Week had plenty of this but when would the runway look like the streets of New York? That’s why I try to showcase African models and designers making positive moves both on and off the runway. (The Cut examines this theory more in their new article, Why Fashion Keeps Tripping Over Race.)
