Gugu Mbatha-Raw at the 2011 NAACP Image Awards

March 7, 2011

English-South African actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw of the now-defunct NBC hit series Undercovers attended the 2011 NAACP Image Awards in a black Alberto Makali embroidered back gown. Gugu was nominated at the 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series against Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy), Jada Pinkett-Smith (HawthoRNe), Wendy Davis (Army Wives) and Regina King (Southland). Regina won the award in the end but good to see that Gugu was recognized for her work on the now cancelled NBC drama series Undercovers!

Next up for Gugu is the Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts film, Larry Crowne, which is due out July 2011. According to IMDB, the film focus on a middle-aged man, who reveints himself by going back to college after losing his job. The action comedy film also stars Taraji P. Henson, Pam Grier, Wilmer Valderrama, and Cedric The Entertainer.

Larry Crowne summary via IMDB: Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he’s worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.
