March 15, 2011

A few nights ago at the United Nations, supermodel and current Ladybrille covergirl Iman (in a black and white DVF ensemble) presented the Kakenya Center’s Kakenya Ntaiya a 2011 Diller Von Furstenberg Award in Excellence.

“The women being honored tonight remind me of my mother,” Von Furstenberg said. “They use strength and courage to turn defeat into victory and to help others.” INSTYLE

For two years now CDFA President and fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg hosted an celebrity-attended award ceremony in support of her charitable organization, The Diller Von Furstenberg Foundation which honors inspirational women. The honorees will receive $50,000 to further their charitable  agenda. In the following video, the 2011 DVF honoree talks about being the first woman from her hometown to attend school in the U.S. She also talked about she was destined to marry by age 13 but she knew she didn’t want that life at a young age and she admired her teachers which inspired her to become a teacher. She knew getting education was the key to getting what she wanted. Her determination led her to create a quality school for Massai Kenya girls called The Kakenya Center where she hopes to breed future world leaders.
