Liya Kebede Attends Desert Flower NYC Screening

March 20, 2011

Ethiopian model Liya Kebede, one of my most recognized faces in fashion, attended the New York screening of her film debut, Desert Flower, with her husband Kassy Kebede. The film (co-starring Anthony Mackie) focus on a Somali woman who fled her country to escape an arranged marriage and she then went to become a international model and human rights activist.

Associated Press – Liya Kebede is a “Desert Flower”

Liya on Desert Flower: It’s her story from going from a nomadic girl from Somali. It’s basically her journey of  her life story and it’s her going from a nomadic lifestyle to going to London where she became a maid then going to become a incredible fashion model. And then she comes the first person to ever talk about female genital mutilation. It’s such a wonderful story and I was inspired to be apart of it. It’s a story of a young girl growing to be a woman. It’s about discovering yourself and starting from zero again.

As previously reported a year ago on FG2BH, Liya met the Somali human rights and female genital mutilation survivor Waris Dirie after she wrapped up filming. The look-a-like pair went on to appear in the Winter 2010 Holiday AD Campaign for H&M. Liya recently spoke with The Cut about the effect the movie’s message – “It will encourage everyone to go out and dare to try things; to put oneself out there and confront things.”

Desert Flower has been viewed by the global community from Berlin to Lagos, Nigeria prior to its official New York Screening. Visit its official website for box office showtimes! I like the profound message of the film and it’s a definite must-see!
